How to Mount Skis at Home

As ski skills progress and you need more control over your gear, set up a small ski shop in your workshop. By arranging a small shop of your own you are equipped to begin mounting, tuning and working on your own ski gear. Be warned, once you get the process down, your friends all come around looking for free ski tunes and mounting. Ski bindings are proprietary to the fixtures and attachments but all follow a basic pattern and formula. When starting out mounting, set up the shop to accommodate each style of bindings and follow the maker's individual directions.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the workbench of any tools or debris. Attach C-clamps at the front and rear end of the bench-table. If you wish, use a dedicated ski vise to hold the skis.

    • 2

Keep a power drill with various bits, screwdrivers and a ski torque wrench in handy reach for any mounting job. A ruler and straight edge is required for effective mounts.

    • 3

Take the weight of the person getting their bindings mounted. Cross-reference the weight with a DIN chart to get the proper DIN setting for the bindings once mounted. DIN settings are ski industry standard settings for binding strength. Generally speaking, the lower the DIN, the less adept the skier.

    • 4

Measure out the distance for the binding in relation to the waist (center) of the ski, size of skier, and any proprietary measurements as dictated by the binding maker.

    • 5

Drill out the binding mount holes and attach the bindings to the skis. Many bindings require a precise torque setting for the binding bolts. Find these numbers in the installation guide for the bindings. Use the torque wrench to achieve the right setting.

    • 6

Push the ski boot into the binding, on the vise or in the clamps, and push it until the boot pops out. Remove the skis from the bench, and go out on a mellow hill to test the bindings. Once you are confident on the bindings post mellow run, take them to the level of hill you regularly ski.
