Can Snorkel Goggles Be Used in Indoor & Outdoor Pools?

Snorkeling goggles are not just for use in the ocean. You can use them in pools indoors and outdoors to help you see in the water. When fitted properly, goggles also help protect your eyes from contaminants.
  1. Types

    • Masks with black silicone skirts are usually used outdoors.

Snorkel goggles are also called masks because they cover the eyes and nose as opposed to simple goggles, which just cover the eyes. Those most suited for indoor pools have a clear silicone skirt which connects to the glass and covers the nose and eyes to create a watertight seal. Masks with black silicone seals offer further protection by reducing sun exposure and are used outdoors.

    Benefits

    • Use eye protection in swimming pools indoors or out.

According to a bulletin by Michigan State University titled "Bacterial Analysis of Pool Water," swimming pools contain bacterial contaminants. A good-fitting mask helps keep pool water from getting to your nose and eyes. Test the fit of your mask to ensure it creates a seal on your face by placing it in position over your eyes and nose and pushing it gently against your face. Without using the strap, inhale very slightly and if the mask stays in place when you let go, you have a good fit.

    Considerations

    • Condensation occurs inside a sealed mask so use an anti-fogging agent sold by swimming and snorkeling retailers. The mask strap should be tightened only enough to ensure a good seal without restricting blood flow. Wash the mask after use with warm soapy water and rinse well, store away from sunlight to prolong the life of the silicone parts.
