How to Counter an Underhook When Wrestling

The underhook is executed as an offensive control position in wrestling. The wrestler with the underhook position has his arm under the armpit of the opponent. The wrestler with the underhook is capable of elevating and extending the body of the opponent to create offensive openings at the leg level. The wrestler with the underhook can also pull on the shoulder and throw the opponent off balance. Defending the underhook position is a critical skill for most wrestlers.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid the underhook position by maintaining a wide base in your stance. Keep your elbows down and tucked against your rib cage. Make head contact with the opponent but avoid tie-up positions.

    • 2

Limp arm out of the underhook by reaching your arm until your shoulder contacts your ear. Pull the arm down in a swift motion to slip out of the underhook. Counter with a single leg on the underhook side as you free yourself from the control.

Counter the underhook with a throw. Pull your wrist through his armpit and pinch your elbow to your ribs to trap his arm. Turn your hips parallel to the opponent as you grab his free arm. Throw your hips into him, pull on the free arm and turn your body to throw him over your hips.

Circle your feet back and away from the underhook and slip your arm from the control. Circling back and away creates space between you and the opponent while creating an opportunity to escape the underhook.
