How to Make a Little Girl's Cheer Uniform

A girl's first cheerleading uniform is a truly special garment. Her first experience on a cheer squad will provide memories to last a lifetime, and the pride of putting on her uniform before each game or event will stay with her long after she has retired from cheerleading. However, these uniforms can be costly. A great alternative to purchasing a new uniform each year is to make one. With a bit of effort and creativity, a beautiful little girl's cheerleading uniform can be made at home.

  1. Gathering Materials

      Go to your local craft or fabric store to choose a pattern for the cheer uniform. Patterns for sports uniforms can be found in the uniform sections of pattern books or in the costume sections depending on the brand of pattern you purchase. Make sure that you choose a pattern that meets the dress code regulations of your child's squad For example, some squads have a no bare-midriff policy.

      Choose fabric in the colors of your child's school or cheerleading squad. Ideally, the uniform should contain only two colors. Choose a stiff fabric, such as a knit polyester, to ensure that the uniform you are making maintains its structured look. Have the fabric cut in the amount you need to make the uniform. Purchase thread that matches the colors of your fabric.

      Head to the embellishment section of the craft or fabric store and purchase large fabric letters that can be sewn onto the uniform. Choose letters that spell your child's squad, school or sports team name. Choose letters that can be visible from far away; raised, shiny or metallic fabrics are best. Purchase some sequins if you wish to add more glitter to the uniform.

    Making the Uniform

      Cut out each piece of the uniform pattern from the pattern package. Lay the fabric out upside down on a completely flat surface, ensuring that there are no ripples or bumps anywhere. Pin the pieces of pattern to the fabric and cut the fabric out following the dotted line that appears on each pattern piece.

      Insert the color of thread that matches the portion of the uniform you are sewing into the spool of your sewing machine, making sure that the thread is usable in your particular machine. Carefully following the directions on the pattern bag, sew each piece together. Make sure you are sewing the pieces inside out so that the seams end up on the inside of the uniform when it is complete.

      Once the uniform has been sewn, add the fabric letters to the top of the uniform by sewing them straight across the chest area, making sure each letter is aligned . Once they are sewn, consider sewing a row of sequins around the letters to make them "pop" more when your little girl is on the field, court or stage cheering in her new uniform!
