How to Use Padded Lifting Straps

Lifting straps are used in weightlifting to aid in maintaining grip on heavy barbells during lifts such as the deadlift. Lifting straps fasten around the wrist and have an attached nylon or canvas strap that is wrapped around the barbell during lifting. Pads are added to the wrist straps for comfort.

Instructions

    • 1

Fasten padded wrist bands firmly around your wrists. The straps should be tight enough to be snug, but should not be uncomfortable or obstruct circulation. Straps may also simply have an unadjustable loop.

    • 2

Wrap the straps tightly around the surface of the barbell. Gym chalk may be used to improve traction.

    • 3

Grip the barbell around the wrist strap and perform the lift. Twisting the barbell toward you before lifting may improve the tightness of the strap.
