Instructions for the Shimano Ultegra

The Ultegra line of bicycle components are produced by Shimano and are utilized on road bicycles. The company's hierarchy of road bicycle offerings lists Ultegra components second only to the Dura Ace's range of components as of 2010. Using the Ultegra system requires learning the Shimano Integrated System method of braking and shifting.

Instructions

    • 1

Grip the handlebars and the brake levers. Feel for the small lever housed on the inside of the outer brake lever. These are the shifters -- part of the Shimano Integrated System.

    • 2

Begin pedaling the bicycle and grip the brake levers in toward the bicycle frame to engage the brakes. Use the right-hand brake for most braking purposes as it is the back brake. Engage the front brake using the left-hand side lever.

    • 3

Push the inside lever to the right to move the gear one position down the cassette -- the large cluster of toothed circles on the back wheel. Push to the right to run through the full gear range, one click at a time. Push to the left to move the gears up one for each click.

    • 4

Push the inside left-hand lever to the left to move the chain up one full chain-ring -- the large toothed wheels surrounding the pedal cranks. Push again if you have a three-ringed bicycle. Push the lever to the right to lower the chain ring.

    • 5

Turn the barrel adjustments on the shifter and brake levers to tighten or loosen the shifter cables or brakes cables until your reach your desired settings.

    • 6

Push down and then out on the silver lever on the center of each wheel to disengage the wheel's quick-release mechanism. Turn to the right and push up on the lever to tighten the wheel back into position.
