Rhode Island Snowmobile Trails

Though Rhode Island is the country's smallest state, it has a surprising number of state parks and public lands. Since Rhode Island does not get the same snowfall volume as other New England states, it has only a few designated snowmobile trails. However, snowmobiling is permitted on public lands in four counties at the discretion of park managers. According to the state Department of Environmental Management, snowmobiling is allowed from half an hour before sunrise to 11 pm. After sunset, the buddy-system is required and solo snowmobiling is not allowed.
  1. Bristol County

    • Located along the shores of Narragansett Bay, Colt State Park in Bristol County is often described as the "gem of the Rhode Island State Park system." The park covers 464 acres of land and is known for the open-air Chapel by the Sea. Snowmobiling is allowed seasonally in the park based on snowfall and environmental factors.

    Kent County

    • Kent County covers the middle portion of the state and hosts three areas that are accessible to snowmobiles. Beach Pond State Park, with entrances in Rhode Island and Connecticut, has 430 acres of land and is a popular fishing location. Big River Reservoir Acquisition Area and Wickaboxet Management Area also permit snowmobiles when conditions allow.

    Providence County

    • In Providence County, encompassing the northern part of the state, numerous state parks and management areas allow access to snowmobiles. Pulaski State Park, part of the George Washington Management Area, has the most official trails of all the public lands. Three other management areas offer seasonal snowmobiling, as well as Lincoln Woods State Park and Snake Den State Park.

    Washington County

    • The southernmost county in Rhode Island, Washington is home to eight areas of public land that are open to snowmobiles. Notable among these areas is Burlingame State Park, with 3,100 acres of land, and the largest recreation area in the state, Arcadia Management Area, with more than 14,000 acres.
