Snowmobile Trails in Northern Ohio

Though not known for its winter sports, Ohio has many options for snowmobile enthusiasts to enjoy their hobby, especially in the northern portion of the state. The state receives a large amount of snowfall, up to about 57 inches in some places, so its trails are perfect for snowmobiling.
  1. Maumee State Forest

    • Maumee State Forest is located in the northwestern part of Ohio, not very far from Toledo. Among its attractions are over 5 miles of trail set aside for snowmobiles and all-purpose vehicles. Mountain biking and motorcycling are also allowed on the trail, but only snowmobiles are allowed when the snow covers the ground completely and the ground is completely frozen.

    Mosquito Lake State Park

    • Mosquito Lake is located in Northeast Ohio, near Cortland. Over 30 miles of trails are available to snowmobiling enthusiasts during the winter months. About half of these trails, roughly 14 miles, run along the side of Mosquito Lake. Mosquito Lake is one of the largest lakes in Ohio. The remainder of the trails, about 15 miles, go through forest. About 5 miles of these trails must be shared with mountain bikers. In addition to snowmobiling, the park offers opportunities for ice fishing, ice boating, ice skating, and cross country skiing.

Snowmobile trails are also open to mountain bikers during the summer months. The snowmobile trails start near the west boat ramp of the large lake alongside which the park rests. Other winter recreation options include ice fishing, ice skating, and cross country skiing.

    Western Reserve Greenway

    • This massive trail stretches 43 miles from Ashtabula to near Warren, two towns in the northeastern part of the state. This part of Ohio has the largest snowfall of any part of the state. Most of the trail was built upon the former site of train tracks for the PennCentral railroad. The trail begins within the city of Ashtabula, right across the street from the local office of the Ohio Department of Transportation, and ends in the small town of Champion. In addition to snowmobiling, the trail is also open to hiking, horseback riding, in-line skating and biking.
